How Lingerie Became Associated With Sex

Lingerie has long been associated with sex or the act of being sexy. But have you ever stopped and wondered why that’s son? How did wearing such intimate clothing in lace and other materials become so seductive? Lingerie comes in a myriad of shapes, colors and textures, flirting with both the wearer and the person who sees it since it doesn’t exactly reveal it all. At the core of lingerie is mystery, which is what makes it so appealing and seductive.

Kinky Lingerie has long been associated with sex given it touches a woman’s most private parts on her body. It’s sensual to think such fabrics touch her most delicate points, which a guy dreams of touching. The idea of lingerie being associated with sex in popular culture came about in the 1800s when any suggestion of intimacy was a secret matter only shared between a husband and wife. The corset was the “it” lingerie piece that was made to push, pull and manipulate a woman’s body.

While the corset is still a staple in lingerie fashion, it’s come a long way from the torture devices that would practically suffocate women  (it also caused organ deformation, miscarriage and crushed ribs). Today, corsets are merely lingerie items that accentuate a woman’s body and her curves.

After the corset, came the creation of the bra in 1919 by Mary Phelps Jacobs. Society didn’t require a corset anymore thanks to WWI fabric shortages and lingerie companies needed something new to provide their customers. The slip was also introduced in the 1920s and is still very popular today as a sexy teddy. In the 1930s and 1940s, women started to buy their undergarments in separates, purchasing bras and “bloomers” to match.

But then came the 1950s and lingerie started to become more accepted by society thanks to pin-up girls that were dressed in the latest lingerie trends like girdles, corsets and seamed stockings. Here, lingerie became associated with sex symbols. By the time the 1960s and 1970s hit, the sexual revolution came and lingerie was now a symbol of sex. Since then lingerie has become more and more accessible and comes in a variety of forms. But now, lingerie is empowering for women, allowing her to gain confidence and more. Lingerie has transformed from being something that restrictive and secretive to an freeing way to show off one’s sexuality and sensuality!
